HP Touchsmart TX2 keyboard failure (and the cure)

3507421560_6131a1e9a4[1]

This morning, something weird happened on my new HP Touchsmart TX2 (a multitouch tablet PC). The keyboard just stopped working, including all the buttons around it (such as the volume up, volume mute and volume down buttons). The keys simply didn’t react anymore.

To solve the issue, I tried rebooting, and this is when I noticed that the keyboard also didn’t work in the BIOS. For example, I was unable to display the boot menu by pressing the “ESC” key anymore.

I then connected an external USB keyboard, and it worked just fine. This really sounded like a hardware failure.

Since the device is of course still under warranty, I called HP tech support. I chose the French language option, meaning I was talking to a French technician. I have to say, I was impressed by the quality of the support.

First, I was directed to a guy responsible for the desktop Touchsmart PCs, who couldn’t help me (bad start) but promised me another technician would call me in “a few minutes”. I thought “yeah right”, but what do you know, 15 minutes later they actually called.

The cure was the following:

  • Remove the battery.
  • Unplug the laptop.
  • Press the “Power on” button for 3 minutes.

This part is not very funny, because the power on button is actually a sliding button, and it is quite painful to press it for 3 minutes (aka eternity).

  • Without letting the power button go, replug the laptop to the power adapter.
  • Restart the laptop normally.

After these steps, the keyboard was back. I assume that it is a kind of reset, and that pressing the power button was to make sure that all the condensers were actually empty. Anyway, it worked, and it saved myself the painful step of sending my laptop back to HP!

The latest version of the BIOS solves the dead keyboard problem. Apparently, this only happens when you start up the computer in tablet mode.

I have had a completely different problem with my TouchSmart: After boot, 2 thirds of screen was black. Screen came back to normal after a reboot after 10 to 15min power on.

I call HP support, they gave me same cure than you: Press "Power on" during 3min.

So, if you have a hardware problem with your TouchSmart, I suggest to try this before to call HP support.

That happened to me too. I finally got a rep on the phone who had seen the problem before. We started with the battery off thing (but pressing the power button for only 30 seconds) and it worked, but he had me update the bios as well. You just go to the website, type in your model of computer, check the version of Windows you have and download it. The program turns the computer off for you and when you restart it, problem solved for good. Hope this helps.

This apparently happens when you switch on the laptop in tablet mode. The last time this happened to me, I had to take the laptop to an authorised service centre. They made me sign all these papers and then they started opening the whole thing right in front of my eyes! Made me shiver! I did not want to go through the hassle again so i googled my problem. And was saved!
Thanks a lot again :)

I never had this keyboard problem, and then I updated the bios to F25 and BAM, no I have the problem. Now I need to find the original F21 that came with the machine to get back to a normal state.

Come on HP, test this stuff before putting it out for download.

Totally thought this was the most ridiculous fix ever. We almost didn't try it but sure enough, it totally worked!!! we also updated the BIOS like other people are mentioning. here is the link to that file: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-68739-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2093&product=3860702

After installing Windows 7 & all the updated HP drivers including the BIOS. And re-installnig, searching the HP help desk and because I'm deployed to the Desert (No help desk from where we're at in Afghanistan I was losing hope fast! I read your solution, thought "Yeah, right!" went on to read the additional comments and " though they were typed you your buddies." Then I gave it a try, and thoght "Holy COW! Thank you soooo much!! If you were selling a product I would have brought it. I took an extra careful look at all the advertisments in hopes you continue to get vendors wanting to advertize on your page. I can't say it enough, Thank You. & Holy Cow! It worked!

He he no I don't have anything to sell (at least not here). I am just active in the software development community, and we are used to share knowledge, it is a great way to progress.

I am glad that it helped.

Take care,
Laurent

Un-be-freaking-lievable. This worked for me too. My issue was not the keyboard not responding, it was NOTHING responding. No power, no nothing. 3mins IS a long time to hold that button down, but as long as it works I'm happy :)

Cheers!
Chris

# minutes is a very long time holding the slide. But it was worth it. I questioned my family on what they did to the laptop that could have turned off the keyboard. Lets just say I now have to take the family to dinner and apologize.
Thanks for the post it has brought peace to our house.
